Thanksgiving is around the corner and that means it’s turkey time. I don’t know about you, but I love Thanksgiving and everything about it. From the Fall weather, to the time with family and the delicious food that’s so good you want it alllll year long. It’s just a fantastic holiday. Now, my family has a pretty well set, amazing Turkey technique. However, there are some other ways to go about the whole turkey cook time, one of which is cooking it in a Big Green Egg Grill. Now these grills are pretty amazing, they can cook just about anything but I never really realized that they can take care of a turkey too. Well they can, and here is what I’ve found.
This smoking of a turkey is new to me but the more I see, the more I like it. From the techniques I’ve found, adding soaked hickory or pecan chips or really what will work well for the flavor you’re going for over a heated piece of charcoal is essential and results in a delightful flavor. You can choose to brine your turkey if you’d like, as this will hold in moisture and make it super delicious. However, you can flavor your turkey and go about it however you want, the options are endless. As for the cooking of the turkey, simply place your grill plate on over the plate setter and you’re set. Assuming you’ve already preheated your egg, place the turkey on and get that smoking going. The length of time of course depends on how you like your turkey and the size of the bird. However, you should expect from three to four hours time. Make sure to check your turkey’s temperature, check in the thickest part of the thigh to make sure the temperature is at 165 degrees fahrenheit. Pull that sucker out and let it set for about half an hour. Then it’s ready to eat! There are some great recipe ideas out there as well and you should try as many as you can!
There are so many great ways to smoke a delicious Thanksgiving turkey that will have you coming back to this method year after year. It’s pretty simple too and I know I’ll have plenty of other things to be doing on Thanksgiving, that something simple will be much appreciated! I’m ready now for some delicious new turkeys!
